Adidas Originals Collaborates with Alexander Wang

       Earlier this Summer, there was a rumor that Alexander Wang was collaborating with Adidas. In fact, the brand made it official at Wang’s Spring 2017 runway show. The fashion designer introduced the new line as a surprise finale to his New York Fashion Week runway show Saturday night that included a teaser film and then an army of models marching down the runway in the new clothing line – all in black.  After designing a whole clothing collection with dresses, tops, and handbags, the 32-year-old designer has taken his love for the Three Stripes brand to a new level, and Adidas wanted to capitalize on the designer’s edgy and youthful vibe.

madonnaWang launched his own label 11 years ago and is recognized as one of the most talented and busiest of his generation. he ended, last year, a prestigious three-year stint as creative director at Balenciaga to work on his label and focus on streetwear. 

        Adidas Originals is a line of apparel and footwear that seeks to “disrupt the famous Adidas look while still preserving its familiarity” as Wang said. The key challenge was to change up the Adidas look so it feels fresh, but not to the point that is unrecognizable.  His designs for the company turn its iconic logo on its head, literally. As showgoers saw, the designer has inverted the familiar trefoil logo upside down with the 84-piece collection of apparel is unisex, which is a welcomed twist.

Wang’s collection for the German sportswear giants, Adidas Originals collection, is all black and has the expected downtown cool from the designer guru. It consists of a track suit top and bottom, several t-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, and three footwear styles with prices ranging from $80 to $200. “Originals is such an iconic brand, with instantly recognizable symbols and trademarks. It’s both grounded in heritage and also completely modern,” the designer said. The idea behind this collection was to take the codes and iconography of the Adidas Originals brand and look at what their symbols mean and turn them on their head to invert what is on the surface and add a layer of subversion. It is to show how a certain setting can change people’s entire perception. The full Adidas Originals by Alexander Wang collection will come out next Spring and be sold globally at Adidas Originals stores and Adidas online, and at Alexander Wang stores and Wang online, and e-com sites and select retailers as well.
