(Not) Happily Ever After
2016 is the year love officially died in Hollywood and will forever be remembered as the year of celebrities break ups. While relationships in Hollywood are not exactly known for lasting particularly long, this year has been a tough year for celebrity couples. People have been deluged with jointly issued statements confirming rumored breakups, and pleading for privacy. In many cases, longtime love stories fell apart eliciting sad, irrational reactions from fans. These are the powerful couples who by breaking up, broke the hearts of millions of fans around the world.
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt: the couple called it quit in September 20 after two years of marriage and 12 years of being together. Jolie stunned the world when she filed for divorce from Pitt. It is thought to have all gone down after he clashed with 15-year-old son Maddox on board a private plane days before his wife filed for divorce. The actor is accused of “screaming” while in the air with his wife and their children, which opened an FBI investigation.
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard: A little more than a year after their Bahamas wedding, Heard’s decision to divorce Depp took the world by storm, especially when she made claims of physical abuse. What followed was months of back and forth in the media that saw the actress release images and footage of Depp’s alleged abuse that eventually lead to the pair reaching a settlement just days before a planned court date. Heard fought claims of being a “gold digger” throughout the divorce, but she put them to bed when she donated her entire $7 million settlement to victims of domestic abuse.
Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris/Tom Hiddleston: Swift has been through two high-profile boyfriends within a year and the butt of every joke on social media. She surprised fans when she dumped Calvin earlier this year, and it was not the easiest split. The pair soon engaged in a bitter war of words on social media that sent Twitter into meltdown. But then, just weeks later, she struck up a controversial romance with Tom Hiddleston. After a few months of awkward pictures and romantic trips abroad, the pair ended their relationship on amicable terms.
Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson: It was hard not to love those two who were open about not feeling the need to get married. The German actress, who was married to the French actor Guillaume Canet, did admit that she did not know if she would tie the knot again. However, moving in with Jackson was supposed to be the next stage in their relationship. Just four months after moving in together, the endlessly chic couple parted ways after a decade being in a relationship.
Drew Barrymore and Will Kopelman: After a tumultuous childhood and failed marriages to Jeremy Thomas in the ‘90s and Tom Green in the early eighties, the actress-producer had finally found love with art consultant Will Kopelman. The two settled down and had two daughters, 3-year-old Olive and 2-year-old Frankie. Drew filed for divorce after four years of marriage.
